It is with deep sense of exhilaration and hope that I welcome launching of the website of West Bengal Correctional Services. Prison, indeed is a forgotten world and has led to many misconceptions about life in prisons. The website would strive to remove such misconceptions and inform public & authorities at large the true living conditions of the prisoners and what all is being done for them. It is true that prisoners have committed crime for which they have been punished and deprived of their basic right of freedom.

Having done so let us treat them as human beings and give correctional treatment to them so that they can once again be integrated in the society. When a court sentences an offender to imprisonment, it imposes a punishment, which is inherently extremely afflictive. Prison conditions must not aggravate this inherent affliction. I exhort all prison officials and public at large to bring about an attitudinal change and discard all old set ideas towards the prisoners and request them to ensure the physical, mental and emotional well-being of every man, woman and children entrusted to our care.
